Dr. David Smith

Lead Pastor,

Centerville, Northmont, Springboro, Beavercreek

As a gifted teacher and visionary leader, you will quickly come to appreciate David’s warm, relational style, his humor and his wisdom. When preaching, he uses a style that is both expositional and practical. In addition, he leads the staff each week in prayer, worship, Bible interaction and vision.

David is a graduate of Nyack College (B.S.) and Toccoa Falls College; Doctor of Divinity. He is a teacher in the national Perspectives course, where he helps students understand cultural challenges for today’s missionaries. A featured speaker at college campuses, missionary fields and conferences, he also serves on the Toccoa Falls College Board of Trustees and has served on the Board of Directors for the Christian and Missionary Alliance. After serving as a Senior Pastor in Malaysia for several years, David joined the staff at Fairhaven Church in 1998 and became Lead Pastor in 2005.

David and his lovely wife Kathy were born and raised in Southeast Asia: David in Indonesia, where he learned Indonesian as his first language, and Kathy in Cambodia. They have four sons, Tyler (Domonique), Brannon, Peyton and Brent. It’s no surprise the Smiths love Asian food and culture and have traveled overseas extensively. Having played semi-professional soccer here in the U.S. and professional soccer in Malaysia, David enjoys watching all forms of the sport. He still plays soccer, but also enjoys spending time on the golf course. He loves to laugh, is a fan of technology and is always making sure his car is spotless.

Why do you work at Fairhaven?

Fairhaven Church called me to come back to the U.S. while serving as pastor in South-East Asia to an international ex-pat church family. I said, “no” three times only to be convinced by God that this was where He wanted me. The problem was that I had committed to four years in Malaysia so I kept my word and agreed to come to Dayton two years after the call. Ultimately, you can say I came to Fairhaven for three reasons:

  1. This church is not afraid of change. Fairhaven knows that change needs to be made in order to continue to reach upcoming generations with the timeless message of Jesus.
  2. Fairhaven is a church that enjoys being together. It shouldn’t be that strange in churches, but it seems that it is ... this church likes to be together, to experience community. I like people so it was a reason to come.
  3. The passion to reach people who do not know Jesus personally with the life changing relationship. Fairhaven has kept their eye “on the ball” with this and I love that about this church.

Your faith

I gave my life to Jesus in the 8th grade! I still remember it like it was yesterday.

Bible verse

“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121
